Optimizing a MOOC Platform

Project Description

At Code for Africa, my role as an E-Learning Course Developer was focused on enhancing online learning experiences through innovative courseware design. My efforts were part of a strategic initiative to revamp the online learning platform, ensuring that it met the evolving needs of learners and the organization's educational objectives.

I was tasked with several key responsibilities that contributed to both the redevelopment of the e-learning platform and the creation of engaging online courseware. The following sections outline my multifaceted role, detailing the skills I applied and the strategic initiatives I led to elevate the online learning experience.

Learner Research

To tailor the e-learning platform to the nuanced needs of a diverse learner base, a comprehensive user research initiative was undertaken. This involved a systematic approach to collecting and analyzing platform data on current learners' demographics, geographic locations, platform use, and other details. The aim was to build an empirical foundation that would drive user-centric design and functionality enhancements for the platform's relaunch.

Learning Pathways

Based on insights drawn from the CfA Platform Audit, I then designed thematic learning pathways that were broad enough to encompass a range of courses while being specific enough to offer depth and specialization in each area. Each pathway consisted of a collection of courses, both open and paid, designed to lead to a certificate upon completion. The courses within each pathway were sequentially structured to build on each other, starting with introductory topics and advancing to more complex subjects. The proposal included details on the technical requirements for developing these learning pathways into the platform and integrating it with other tools.

Course and Media Development

In my role at CfA, I also began the development of a self-paced course with 4 modules, designed for journalists and delivered through the CfA Learn Dash Learning Management System. This required the redesign of the LMS page, development of curriculum in collaboration with Subject Matter Experts, as well as the development of media (instructional and promotional videos).

Training

Finally, during my time at CfA, I also led a workshop on developing instructional videos using Canva. This workshop was also covered through a CfA blog post that outlined the logic and process for this development as a means of supporting various Subject Matter Experts in becoming comfortable with media development for training purposes.
